200-års jubileum av Verdis födelse

It’s not only the singers who felt Verdi… Several operas of no striking force, and now forgotten, except for occasional revivals in Italy, were now written by Verdi, and then he suddenly seemed to find himself, for in 1851 he wrote “Rigoletto” in 40 days, and this popular work was followed by “Il Trovatore,” first sung in Rome, Jan. 19, 1853, and “La Traviata,” produced in Venice, March 6, of the same year. Verdi came to dominate the Italian opera scene after the era of Vincenzo Bellini, Gaetano Donizetti, and Gioachino Rossini, whose works significantly influenced him. In his early operas, Verdi demonstrated a sympathy with the Risorgimento movement which sought the unification of Italy. He also participated briefly as an elected politician. Giuseppe Verdi, leading Italian composer of opera in the 19th century, noted for operas such as Rigoletto (1851), Il trovatore (1853), La traviata (1853), Don Carlos (1867), Aida (1871), Otello (1887), and Falstaff (1893) and for his Requiem Mass (1874). Verdi’s father, Carlo Giuseppe Verdi, an Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (La Roncole, Italy, October 9 or 10, 1813 – January 27, 1901) was an Italian Romantic composer, mainly of opera.
